Research Scientist I or II

The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for one or more Research Scientists who will manage and supervise the day-to-day operations in the structural engineering research and fee-for-service operation laboratories. In this role, they will provide support to faculty, students, staff, and external users of the lab with in-lab and field research activities.
The Research Scientist will provide oversight of laboratory and off-campus field operations, including acquisition, maintenance and repair of laboratory assets, supervision of people working in the laboratory and in the field, training development and delivery, administration of laboratory and field safety requirements, and financial management of the structures fee-for-service operations. Collaboration with research teams and faculty within, and external to CCEE in the conduct of research and other project work is an important part of the role. Supervision will include other structures laboratory staff members and graduate and undergraduate student employees.
The successful candidate will possess: knowledge of laboratory safety standards, mechanics of materials, engineering statics and dynamics principles; the ability to develop a quality program for laboratory and field environments; and the ability to create and maintain accurate records. The candidate will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to diversity and inclusivity as this position works with a broad and diverse group of individuals both on and off campus. This position may require additional hours on occasion to be responsive to the research requirements of the position, may include overnight travel to off-campus locations and may include nighttime work on occasion. There will be times when work is done at heights, when the work requires manual push, pull or lift of up to 100 pounds, and when work will be done in confining areas.
The successful candidate will be trained to manage a research laboratory operation with a strong emphasis on quality, safety, space, laboratory asset and project time management. In this role, the candidate will lead the development of technical drawings, design calculations, analytical methods selection and communications related to the fabrication and configuration of laboratory specimens and supporting test apparatus as required for a project. In addition, the successful candidate will acquire and develop the necessary skills to be accountable for the entire facility and laboratory asset base used in the structures laboratory and field operations. Further, the ideal candidate will apply this knowledge to operations and safety training of new users of these assets in the lab and in the field and in coordinating the development of standard operating procedures.

This position will be hired at a level I or II. Minimum requires for a level I is a Bachelor’s degree (PS806). Minimum requires for a level II is a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience (PS807).
