Performs advanced and skilled electrical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of overhead and underground transmission and distribution (T & D) lines and equipment. Frequently works with energized high voltage lines, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions. Work is normally performed under the direction of a Line Crew Supervisor. Work is subject to inspection while in progress or upon completion for quality and operating results.
Performs the installation, maintenance and repair work on low and high voltage lines. Installs poles, transformers and other auxiliary equipment. Tests voltage loads on transformers. Makes adjustments to transformers for the required voltage. Installs transformers and places into operation. Locates system faults and makes repairs in primary and secondary lines. Replaces broken or faulty equipment on poles and in underground equipment. Performs work on energized lines using hot sticks or rubber gloves. Inspects electric conduit systems installed by outside contractors to ensure compliance with KUA standards and specifications. Stock trucks with required material, supplies and tools. Cleans and repairs tools regularly. Operates line truck and associated equipment. Performs related work as required. May be required to be on standby for trouble calls outside of normal working hours. Must be available to respond immediately following storm events and other emergencies impacting the electric system. May be required to work nights and weekend shifts. All other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electric line work. Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions. Extensive knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electric distribution systems. Knowledge of first aid, including artificial respiration. Ability and willingness to climb poles and to work among high-tension wires, exercising proper safety precautions. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions quickly and accurately. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees. Ability to meet physical requirements necessary for climbing poles and performing manual tasks in line work. Must be able to do moderate to heavy lifting up to 100 pounds. May be required to work in confined spaces. Performs related tasks as required. Ability to satisfactorily complete tasking and testing for advancement to Lineman position or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED required and experience as a Lineman. Successful completion of a minimum of a four year apprenticeship program is required. Must have held the position of Lineman First Class and/or possess a Journeyman Lineman certification from an accredited apprenticeship program.
Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license issued by the State of Florida. CDL, Type “A” license with Tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment. Preference may be given to individuals who reside within the KUA service area.
