The NanoSteel Company (www.nanosteelco.com) is the world leader in nanostructured steel designs. For over fifteen years, NanoSteel has created progressive generations of iron-based alloys from surface coatings to foils to additive manufacturing to structural sheet steel. For the oil & gas, mining and power industries, NanoSteel has successfully introduced applications of nanostructured coatings to prolong service lifetime in the most extreme industrial environments. In 2014, NanoSteel granted Lincoln Electric the exclusive global manufacturing and distribution rights for these products. This progression of technology development provided the foundation of discoveries that led to the breakthrough in automotive sheet steel towards a new type of 3rd Generation Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) (https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/2016-01-0357/). NanoSteel’s nanostructured AHSS sheet provide a unique combination of high strength and high ductility, allowing reduced gauge vehicle parts to be cold formed using the existing manufacturing infrastructure. In 2016, commercially produced sheet material was delivered to a number of OEMs and Tier 1s including General Motors for evaluation and stamping trials (https://www.autosteel.org/-/media/files/autosteel/great-designs-in-steel/gdis-2016/track-2---branagan.ashx). In 2017, NanoSteel along with a joint development launch partner, AK Steel Corporation, won the Platts Global Metals “Breakthrough Solution of the Year” Award for the development of a new class of 3rd Generation AHSS.
NanoSteel is currently seeking a Research Engineer with a degree in materials science, metallurgy, and/or materials processing with experience in material structural analysis to join its innovative world class R&D team. The position will be located in NanoSteel’s premier R&D facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho, within the Eastern Idaho Technology Corridor and within a few miles of the main research facilities of the Idaho National Laboratory, USDOE. Note that Idaho Falls is located in the Greater Yellowstone Recreational Area and is in close proximity (≈100 miles) to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Career benefits include working at the cutting edge of the emerging science of nanotechnology and participate in the process of introducing a new class of nanostructured steel for the automotive market while supporting automotive manufactures as they move though material qualification.
The ideal candidate will exhibit good communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work within a team with focused milestone delivery in a fast paced goal orientated research environment. The position is expected to be filled by a motivated and focused self-starter with comprehensive understanding of basic metallurgical concepts and thus requires at a minimum a bachelor or master’s degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, or closely related discipline. Knowledge and experience in materials analysis and evaluation of AHSS is a plus.
As a Research Engineer focused on the development of next generation paradigm changing monolithic nanostructured sheet steel, you will be a part of the team working on Redefining Steel® for large multibillion dollar markets including creating new functionality and design for automobile markets.
Responsibilities for this position will include but not be limited to the following:
Processing proprietary alloys with a variety of laboratory and pilot scale equipment
Sample preparation for structural analysis
Structural analysis implementation (Optical microscopy, SEM, Auger electron spectroscopy)
Characterizing sample properties by thermal, mechanical, and impact testing techniques
Sheet material formability and stamping analysis
Working with and generating large numbers of research samples
Heat treating alloys in accordance with specific program schedules
Assist with development of research plans and ability to implement detailed research plans
Writing comprehensive technical laboratory reportsThe ability to provide timely written reports, PowerPoint presentations with high quality illustrations, research / testing summaries, etc., is a requirement.
