The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CvEEN) at the University of Utah invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions in the area of cyberinfrastructure and civil engineering systems with a start date of August 16, 2018. The successful applicants will be expected to develop and teach innovative undergraduate and graduate courses within CvEEN and contribute to emerging distance and remote education programs; develop a sustained, externally-funded research program; mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students; and provide departmental, college and university service. An earned doctorate in Civil & Environmental Engineering or closely aligned engineering and computer science fields with a focus on cyberinfrastructure before the date of hire is required. For Associate Professor and Professor levels, a track record of externally funded research in the cyberinfrastructure area is expected. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary.
All areas of expertise related to the advancement of cyber-technologies in civil and environmental infrastructure are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those aligning with teaching and research strengths in CvEEN innovating intelligent multifunctional systems with applications to structural health monitoring, hazard mitigation and emergency response, public health and safety, transportation operations, net-zero buildings, smart cities, accelerated construction, and sustainable and resilient infrastructure, water, energy and resource management.
CvEEN has embarked on an exciting strategic initiative to modernize the undergraduate curriculum, innovate new teaching approaches, and expand the opportunities for learners to access our courses. New hires will be expected to help with ideas and contributions to mold the CvEEN educational vision to incorporate cyberinfrastructure elements and support the implementation of the developed curriculum.
High-impact research by the successful applicants is desired across the life cycle of infrastructure, including planning and design, mitigating disturbances, monitoring infrastructure conditions, performing self-diagnosis, optimizing operations, and conducting self-repairs. The intellectual depth, innovation and promise of the candidates, as well as their ability to participate in multidisciplinary research collaborations, are of higher priority than their specific research areas. Areas of particular interest to support the Department’s enhanced focus on collaborations throughout the College and University include:
Low-cost and low-power sensors and wireless communication networks;
Next generation diagnostic and control systems supporting autonomous infrastructure systems;
Reliability of cyber-technologies in civil and environmental infrastructure systems;
Extreme data management, analytics, and visualization;
Multi-level and hyper-resolution sensing and integrated modeling;
Internet of Things innovations in civil and environmental infrastructure systems; and
Cyber-physical security implications of technologies in civil and environmental infrastructure.
Candidates will also be evaluated based on their ability to demonstrate strong core fundamentals in one or more areas such as data analytics, operations research/systems analysis, geographic information science, artificial intelligence, economic analysis, and risk sciences that will allow diverse work across disciplinary boundaries.
The University of Utah College of Engineering aims to prepare students for leadership positions and professional practice in academia, industry, and government. The college is greatly expanding in the number of tenure-track faculty, and has grown to research nearly $80 million per year, making it one of the top 50 engineering universities in the country for research productivity. The CvEEN department is one of seven rapidly growing departments within the College of Engineering.
