The City of Austin, Austin Transportation Department is seeking a mid to senior level ENGINEER B or C with experience in temporary traffic control review and inspections of Right-of-Way (ROW) usage. The ideal candidate will bring experience in collaborating with developers, engineers, and construction teams (internal and external to the City) to develop traffic safety strategies and make field adjustments to ongoing construction projects, while maintaining public safety and mobility. The ideal candidate will bring experience in:
Working and Technical Knowledge of the Federal & Texas Manuals on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Review and Development of Temporary Traffic Control Safety Strategies
Utility Planning and Construction Methods
Temporary Traffic Control Inspections
Use of Enterprise Case Management Software (to facilitate permitting and reviews)
The Engineer B or C in the ROW Division will:
Supervise a staff of 5 ROW Inspectors who are responsible for the inspection of installed temporary traffic control measures to ensure compliance and 3 employees who review developmental plan submittals prior to implementation. Supervisory responsibilities will include advising and mentoring of team members in related traffic engineering concepts and their application; oversee daily work staff assignments; authorize leave and overtime, review and approve time sheets; administer performance reviews, and work with IT staff to continue to enhance enterprise software systems.
Review and/ or prepare stamped, temporary traffic control plans and provide comments for recommended changes for deficient plans. Using established engineering principles, the TxMUTCD, Utility Criteria Manual, and Transportation Criteria Manual; and City code and State/Fed Law will be responsible for developing solution of theoretical or practical traffic engineering concerns associated with construction, maintenance, and special events related to the use of ROW.
Provide engineering counsel to City staff and outside contractors to troubleshoot and resolve difficult problems related to advanced ROW engineering plans/designs.
Coordinate and manage the use of public infrastructure by CIP, utility, site and special event projects and processes with other divisions, departments, contractors, consultants and promoters. Utilizing high level knowledge of construction methods, processes and progression, coupled with advanced traffic engineering knowledge will organize, analyze, interpret and evaluate and resolve engineering solutions that provide practical, cost effective resolutions, meet project time lines, and provide public safety and mobility.
Position requires graduation from an accredited university with major coursework in Engineering or in a related field plus eight (8) years’ experience acquired either before or after licensing as a professional engineer. Must be a licensed engineer (PE) with the ability to obtain State of Texas licensing within six months.
